There is a connection with Old English, when 'teen' described a situation when there was 10 or more, spelt 'teona' or an Old Saxon word 'tiono'. These old words changed into 'teen' over many years with the suffix 'ager' arriving in more modern times

From American English, the word was Teener used from the early 1800's. Much later in that century the word changed slowly to teenager
