Spartan Slaves, or to be more accurate, serfs, were called helots. Sparta became the military state as most know it by today after a revolution of the helots, in which many Spartans died, but were able to gain control over the helots and began to build a viscous army
Spartans
The main problem in Sparta was that the helots, or slaves would often rebel and invading countries would often arm the helots who outnumbered the Spartans 4 to 1
The Spartans (Laconians) sought to expand their territories to gain access to arable fields , water and mineral resources . Those peoples conquered became Helots (slaves) which , in turn , worked the land under Spartan supervision .
Helots where the serfs of Sparta. Serf meaning they were not free men, nor were they slaves.

The Helots were the Spartans slaves. If the Spartans treated them well they would have been more likely to successfully rebel.

it was important to ancient Greeks because slaves did most of their work -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Sparta, Slaves known as Helots (which accounted for appx. 90% of the population) maintained the state while the Spartans would train for war. Also, the Helots served as a source of fear to motivate the Spartans to train so that the slaves would not rebel. An interesting side note, about once every year, the Spartans would massacre Helots to remind them of their place.

The Spartans used Helots to till their land. These were, however, not slaves but serfs - that is they were bound to the land and delivered half their produce to Sparta. They were also used in war as light infantry, and the best of them freed from serfdom after good performance.
The slaves who worked at hard labor in Sparta were known as Helots. They were primarily tasked with agricultural labor and served as a labor force for the Spartans.
