Actually, Perseus fought Medusa, not the other way around. Using gifts from the gods, he went to her home and was able to sneak up on her and slice her head off with a sword. Other than that one part, the details of the myth of Medusa, including where she lived, vary from one version to another. According to the Greek historian Diodorus, Medusa and her two sisters, known as the Gorgons, lived in the Gorgades, a group of islands in the AEthiopian Sea (which is actually on the other side of the African continent from what we now call Ethiopia).. Some stories locate Medusa's home in a cave on the island of Cisthene in the Red Sea.. The Aenid says that the Gorgons lived in the entrance of the Underworld.

Athena gave him a shield to look at medusa'a reflection in so he wouldn't be turned to stone. Herme's gave him a pair of winged sandals. Perseus looked at medusa's reflection and cut off her head while she slept. He took the head to the king and turned him to stone.
Perseus killed her with his sword while she and her sisters slept. When they awoke he promptly ran away.

Going off the Greek myth, where Medusa's slain? A shiny shield sent by Apollo or Athena, i forget which. Going back in her lifetime, making out with a god in Aphrodite's temple was possibly a bad move too.
