It is out of date. Because the E.C. was created to inform uneducated people about the good and bad deeds of presidents to be.

Many consider the electoral college outdated. Some of the original reasons for having it included:

  • Slow distribution of news and information to most people limiting their knowledge of issues and events.
  • The lack of education and literacy for most people limiting their ability to make intelligent decisions about who should be elected to deal with domestic and international issues.
Today (2017) domestic and international news is immediately available to nearly everybody that wants it. Nearly everyone has some sort of understanding of issues as a result of a high school or college education. So enough people should be capable of deciding about American leadership based on actual issues.

But, that is not why many people campaign or vote for candidates. People make their decisions on personal issues. Many vote for (or against) the female candidate, or the black candidate, or the handsomest or most charismatic or the candidate who make promises that obviously can never be delivered as opposed to the one who makes realistic statements.

So even though the electoral college is not functioning the way it was originally intended, may be we still need something to protect the people from themselves.
