The colonists weren't opposed to being taxed, at least, not any more than the average person likes having their money taken. They were however, vehemently opposed to having absolutely no say in how much would be taken and on what it would be spent. They used the slogan "No taxation without representation." This means they would not pay any money to a government they couldn't control.
