I personally wouldn't call him a democrat. He's both loyalist and patriot though. I thinks he's more of a loyalist though. But that's just my opinion.
In the Confederacy a person who did agree with secession was often refered to as a "Unionist" or a "Union man". Those of course were the polite terms. People of the North who sympathized with the secessionists were called "copperheads".
The loyalist were colonist that supported the crown (England).

Loyalists were loyal to King George and Britain while patriots wanted complete separation from the crown.
They had to face the decision of weather to support the British king or not.

They were called Loyalists. Most loyalist moved to Canada after America prevailed in the Revolutionary War. People who did not have an opinion were Neutralists. People who were against the British were Patriots (thank god for them)
