After FDR who served 3 plus terms, the congress passed an amendment:
According to Amendment 22:
"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. "
It states it in the American constitution that a president may only run for two terms max. This is because they belive in a democracy this is right and fair. In Canada :) you can be in office for many years, some PMs have been in power for over fifteen years
George Washington served two terms and was asked to serve again. He was smart enough to realize that this would turn into another monarchy. As a free country that wanted no king this was not a good idea. Every President after Washington respected this convention until F.D. R. who served three terms and died trying to serve a fourth. After this Presidency some issues became apparent and our Government passed a law keeping this from ever occurring again.
Grover Cleveland is the only US president to serve two non-consecutive (or two interrupted) terms of office.
George Washington, who served two terms between 1789 and 1797, did not seek a third term in office.
the only president to serve more than two terms in office was Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt held office for three and one half terms.
FDR was elected to 4 terms. After he died during his fourth term, the Congress passed a law. The President of the USA can serve no more than 2 full terms as President (if he/she is Vice President to a President that dies in office, then they can serve the remaining term as President and serve an additional two terms in office). Therefore President Harry Truman could serve two full terms as President in addition to the term he finished up for FDR. (HST only ran for more term). LBJ could serve as two full terms plus the term he was Vice President for JFK. LBJ only served one full term as President. He did not run again in 1968.
It depends upon how many times Presidents 45 through 53 get re-elected. President's serve 4 year terms and can only serve maximum of two terms, thus the maximum any President can serve is 8 years. As of right now President Obama is our 43rd President serving in the 44th presidential peroid. - so between him and the 54th President there will be 10 other Presidents and each will serve either 4 or 8 years. Since 10 Presidents will serve either 4 or 8 years in order to get to President 54 - there will be a minimum of 40 years (10 x 4 years) to a maximum of 80 years (10 x 8 years) before President 54 takes office. Thus, since we are in year 2009, the range would be from 2049 - 2089 when President 54 takes office.
George Washington served two terms in office from 1789 to 1797. Although he was called to serve a third term, he refused and instead chose to live a private life. Since then all Presidents were only allowed to serve two terms.
The President can only serve up to two terms in office.

FDR was the only president to serve more than two consecutive terms due to the second world war.
Most presidents can only serve for two terms, a maximum of 8 years. However, if a vice-president assumes the presidency with 2 or less years left in the term, he can still elected for two more terms and so serve for 10 years. 10 years is the absolute maximum.
