John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush. Polk, Hayes, Coolidge, Truman and Lyndon Johnson were elected once but chose not to run again. Theodore Roosevelt who served only a partial first term lost his bid for a third term. Gerald Ford, who completed Nixon's term, lost his only run for the presidency.
