Indentured servitude was servitude based on a contract: your intended boss paid your passage to (often) the Americas and once arrived, would provide you with room and board; while in return, you would agree to work for him at no pay for a certain number of years, often five years. The contract also usually stipulated that after serving out your contract, you would recieve a bonus. That might be a piece of land or goods to start yourself up with.

Technically you were and remained a free man. But the treatment of indentured servants often was little or no better than that of a slave. And the majority of people succumbed to diseases within the contract period, so they never saw their freedom or bonus.
