Monseigneur Maria Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, Baron de Vissac Signeur de St Romain was born on September 6, 1757, in the wilderness of Chavaniac. Little Lafayette stayed in Chavaniac with his grandmother and his aunt until he was 11. By La Fayette's second birthday, his father had been killed in the Seven Years' War, notably, by the English. La Fayette was aristocratic, but grew up in relatively meager circumstances when compared to the extravagances common among the French nobles before the French Revolution.
