It's federal law that no living man or woman can appear on U.S. coins. It has been custom since the beginning of the minting of coins for the king's images to be on them so the founders who were anti royalists had a tradition of not putting living presidents on coins. This later became law.
The first was Abraham Lincoln on the 1909 Cent. Then came Washington on the 1932 Quarter. Third is Jefferson on the 1938 Nickel. Next is Franklin D Roosevelt who appeared on the 1946 Dime. John Kennedy came on the 1964 Half Dollar. Finally, Dwight D. Eisenhower appeared on the 1971 Dollar coin, rounding out the first six. Benjamin Franklin did appear on the half dollar in 1948, but he was never a President. Beginning in 2007, the US Mint has been issuing Dollar coins with the Presidents on them, four issues a year, in order of their Presidency.
The George Washington "golden dollar" (actually made of brass, as was the Sacajawea coin) was minted as the first coin in the Presidential dollar series mandated in 2005. The Washington coin was issued in 2007 and the coins featuring subsequent US Presidents will be issued through 2016. Every President will have a coin, provided they have been deceased for 2 years on the scheduled date of issue. As of 2012, the coins are being produced only for collectors, and not for circulation, due to a huge surplus of the coins (which includes some Sacajawea dollar coins).

There are so many people who have been featured on the dollar coin and commemorative dollar coins that it would be next to impossible to list them all. But some of the more common dollar coins include the Dwight Eisenhower dollar, the Susan B Anthony Dollar, the Sacajawea Dollar and the presidential dollars which have more presidents released every year and will eventually encompass all dead presidents.
Lincoln on Cent, Jefferson on 2005 nickel, Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, and some of the Presidents on Dollar coins.

They are worth one dollar. If you decide to collect them, do so for your own enjoyment--there are so many that it is doubtful that the value will increase as a collectable.
