I think the German perspective was to counter Russian aggression, in support of Serbia, against their neighbour Austria/Hungary. Potentially the Russians represented a huge armed force and were allied to France, & by association, to Britain. The British have the most powerful Navy in History, but the Germans have built many modern ships to counter this in the recent arms race..... The Germans have, as they see it, the advantage of interior lines, they are in the middle & able to move resources from front to front as they wish. It soon becomes plain that Germany is very much the domnant partner in the Central Powers: Austria/Hungary & Turkey are bit players at best, in times they are sidelined by the actions on the western front. Despite Brusilovs' action against Austria/Hungary, Russia is soon on the back foot in a major way & Rumania enters the war to great cost. In the end of it all both the German Navy & Army were undefeated, as they saw it, the Allies really were nowhere nearer to Berlin than in 1914. But, considering the cost in Human life, and the misery and devastation of it all, who had really gained anything ?
