The different tribes made treaties with the government, but the government broke the treaties they made with them. Each tribe is a separate nation within the United States, so they expected the government to uphold their agreements. Instead federal troops raided villages and killed men, women, and children or did things like the Trail of Tears removing people from ancestral lands.
