The ethnic group living in the Caribean before the arrival of the Columbus and the Spanish were the Arawaks. They were a very peaceful race, fond of partying and playing games like present-day volleyball and much addicted to the use of mind-expanding substances taken through the nose. And no, it is not their descendants that now live in the LA area of California :-). With a way of life like this they of course didn't stand a chance against the Spaniards, who quickly submitted them and then tried to use them as slaves. The Arawaks were however totally unsuited for slave labor and perished (often by committing suicide) in massive numbers. They practically had vanished from the Caribean within 100 years after the arrival of the Spaniards. The parting gift they left to the world was the worldwide spread of smoking tobacco, and syphilis.
