Well, it's not always the end of the world. Depends on how much u put in. If just a quart or two, don't worry about it. I have intentionally put motor oil in transmissions for years! My Ford aerostar has 3 quarts of 30 weight motor oil in it right now. It was acting up, think the pump was damaged. works pretty good now, and has for the last 4 or 5 months. But you usually wont cause any damage to the tranny by putting motor oil in it. After all it is a hydrualic unit. We use different combinations of tranny fluid, motor oil and hydrualic fluid in our machinary where I work. IT"S JUST OIL!
Read this from a Mobil Oil expert about the differences of the oils.

Seriously? A 305 Chevy motor does not take "transmission fluid"! The transmission takes transmission fluid, and the motor takes oil. The 305 should hold 5 quarts of oil I believe. As for the transmission, I believe that all depends on what transmission you have. Seriously? A 305 Chevy motor does not take "transmission fluid"!
