you may have a bad neutral safety switch. if you hold your foot on the brake turn the key and place the transmission selector in neutral and it cranks and starts this will tell all. Some model neutral safety switch can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled to function correctly again to be trouble free for many more miles.

Why won't my dodge caravan start in park but will start in neutral?

Start by checking the neutral safety switch. This is a switch that won't let the vehicle start if you have it in gear. If the switch goes bad it gives the symptom of not starting in park.

2002 cavalier won't start after replacing transmission?

Make sure that the Neutral Safety Switch is properly connected. If the harness is disconnected, it will not allow the vehicle to start. If it is connected, check to make sure that the switch is good. Otherwise, Make sure that the vehicle is in PARK. The shift selector may say that it is in park, but if the shift lever is not properly indexed, the transmission may be in another gear. Car will not start unless vehicle is in NEUTRAL or PARK.

Your car won't start unless you pushed the shift lever forward in park. After a while it would not start in Park so you put it in Neutral to start and that worked. Now it won't start at al?

The Park and/or Neutral switch is out of adjustment. There is a hidden switch that must be engaged by mechanical means in order for the starter motor to be engaged. This is to prevent accidental starting while the car is in a forward or reverse motion gear, which could result in the vehicle moving in an undesirable direction.

Why would a car start but not go anywhere?

Usually when a car has issues moving from park or neutral it is an early sign that the transmission has gone out. The transmission is responsible for helping the vehicle change gears and move.

Key stuck 2001 Aurora?

to remove the key the vehicle not only needs to be in park but the switch which tells the ignition lock cylinder the vehicle is in park also needs to be engaged .I would start my sarch at the steering coloum and look at the swithc mechanism from the selector (either electrical or mechanical cable ) if this is not located properly then the key will not switch back enough to take out
