Due to the baffles in the exhaust it allows for a free flow out and noise reduction as well it may have a catalitic converter in the muffler plus it depends if the inlet may be smaller that the outlet and visa versa. A towards the engine. My tailpipe only fits on the B end since that was 1/2 smaller so I know this to be correct (1993 Jeep Cherokee)
Toward engine... the direction gas flows.
The fuel pump arrow points away from the fuel tank and points toward the engine.

Most fuel filters will have an arrow that points toward the engine - that will be the correct direction for installing. Other fuel filters will be stamped either on the ends or sides with IN and OUT or TANK and ENGINE or something to that effect. The container or box that the filter came in should also have installation instructions. If still in doubt, ask someone at the business where you purchased it.
