It could be that the Ignition Control Module is faulty. There are known to go bad during the motor being hot, but once cooled down the engine will start. This is located on the front of the motor, underneath the the coil packs. You have to take the coil packs off, and unplug the ICM (Ignition Contol Module), and it will fall off from there.
The rev limiter on the 2005 Sportster is built into the ignition module. It is not possible to remove it. You can upgrade your module to "after market" modules that can increase your rev limits to 6000 RPMs and beyond.
First, double check your plug wire routing from when you changed the ICM. It could also be a bad crankshaft position sensor.
4 posibiltys here.. 1) You ignition module could be bad, or the wiring for it could not be hooked up 2) Coil packs being bad, located on top of the ignition module 3) Crank Position sensor. A real pain to change, look around here on wiki, I just ansered how to change this sensor for another user. 4) Bad computer
Could be a bad coolant temperature sensor, fan relay or thermostat. keep in mind the fan motor itself may be bad.
It depends on the engine... 2.5L is located under the coil pack/Ignition module on the rear of the motor. 2.8L is located on the rear of the motor, under the rear exhaust manifold. Be careful when taking out the sensor, it has a very small bolt holding it in, and the sensors are known to break off in the block. Very big pain to get the remnants out.
The oil filter on a 1990 Pontiac 6000 is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. It is on the side of the motor all the way to the rear, near the firewall.
There is a common problem with Chevy. You have just described it. I have had this problem with a couple of them. a 1988 Pontiac 6000 2.4L and a 1995 Chevy Lumina 3.0L. The 6000 had a bad Ignition Control Module and the Lumina had a bad fuel pump. The Lumina started up fine, I drove for about 4 minutes and then it would cut off. The 6000 was going down the highway. I got off at an exit and it died. The next day I went to the car and it started right up. I drove it until it warmed up and then it would cut out again. I would start by taking the Ignition Control Module out and having it tester at an auto parts store. Most of them do bench tests while you wait usually for free. Good Luck.
