The EGR is right under the throttle body. It has like a little black top. You have to remove the intake hose to see it. Its a pain to get to and remove.
9 times out of 10 is a your EGR valve stuck open due to rust, do a google search for protege low idle you'll find it! good luck
It's bolted right on top of the egr valve which is on the back of the engine under the throttle body there will be a small vacuum line going into where the egr valve bolts into the intake

The egr position sensor is made into the egr valve. Look for the egr valve and you will find a plug with wires plugged into the egr valve. These wires are for the position sensor and they go back to the ecm ( engine control monitor)< computer> James= 15 year Mazda tech just a tip= with engine COLD,reach under valve and press on plunger and see if it moves freely(not easy) but freely.
