dexron/mercon atf. Yes its tranny fluid also.
Unfortunately you need a special tool for the 2004 ford explorer auto tranny. the tranny is sealed. even jiffy lube or ez lube cannot perform this task. your local dealership or aamco must service the tranny.
it is to the left of the heads and you use a funnle and put it in the dipstick hole i know it sounds stupid but your working on a ford
5W-30 ( according to the 1998 Ford Contour Owner Guide )
The fluid goes in where the dipstick for the tranny is, pull the dipstick out and put the fluid into the dipstick tube.
if you look at the front of your tranny. there will be a plug 15/16 big take it out and tranny fluid should come out. if not use a Allen key to put in the hole.
Transmission fluid is always put in through the Tranny dipstick tube.
You add tranny fluid right into where the dipstick is
through the tranny dipstick tube with a tranny funnel.
