The water pump housing is the bottom radeator hose on the right side of the engine. You will need the GM water pump remover tool, you can rent one from Auto Zone or a similar store. remove the hose and the outer-caseing, the waterpump is now slightly visable. Use a .5 inch rachet with the GM tool and turn clockwise.
starter is inside engine.yes I said inside.intake valley and injection system removed, starter is in valley.Big job!!!here it is!The starter on a northstar engine is located beneath the upper intake plenum. This is correct. I have had one replaced on a 95 eldorado. I suggest you go to your favorite auto parts, buy the starter and take car and starter to GM and let them change it. Buying the starter yourself will save around 300.00. .

It's really a matter of how much work you're willing to put into it. If it can fit in the engine compartment, it can be made to work one way or another. However, using anything other than the OEM engine is going to be a LOT of additional work.. you'll probably need to replace the ECM, find either a workable adapter plate for the transmission or a new transmission (which might require a whole new driveshaft), reflashing or replacement of the ECM, etc.
Is this a Northstar 4.6? if so.....I have never found a petcock on one. There is a threaded plug on drivers side at bottom.....good luck getting to it while in car.
