∙ 13y agoThat is because of the way the gear on the distributor and camshaft is tapered. If you turn it the other way it will pull the camshaft towards the rear of the engine. That is all normal. When you put it all together it won't do that.

the shaft that runs through the distributor. it turns on the camshaft housing to make the top of it spin which makes the points open and close, and turns the rotor to send spark to the plugs
Inpossible, the engine is not designed for a distributor.
Hmm, as a rule they don't break, although Chevy had a problem with soft camshafts "rounding." A broken camshaft would make quite a horrible racket when the engine is turned. You most likely do not have a broken cam shaft.
will a bad crank shaft sensor make a 2005 chevy equinox not start
Cranksaft turns twice for 1 distributor rotation.
Corrosion inside the distributor cap. Get a new cap and rotor.
Mine did this, replacement of distributor solved the problem. Go figure?!?
Unbolt the two bolts on either side of the distributor. Disconnect the 2 lower electrical clips. Disconnect the upper clip. Slide distributor out, when re-installing it make sure the distributor "teeth" line up with the slot on the camshaft. Replug everything back in.also make sure it is on top dead centre on compression stroke or the timing will be way out!
I would replace the ignition module in the distributor. Also need to make sure the coil and wire is good too.
In the '95-'96 caprices there was a 4.3 or if you have an ex-cop car there is a 5.7 h.o.
The 1995 & later Optispark distributor has about a 2" diameter wheel with three circular depressions and three rectangular depressions. On closer inspection, you'll note the only one of the three rectangular depressions is a true rectangle. The other two are more of an hour glass shape. The dowel pin on the camshaft's end must be inserted into the depression that is a true rectangular shape. Leave the cap off the distributor before engaging the pin in the slot and you'll be able to turn the rotor on the distributor and make aligning them MUCH easier! If you get them properly engaged, the mounting tabs of the distributor should sit nicely on the mounting bosses of the timing cover. If the tabs and bosses don't touch, the pin isn't properly inserted into the correct slot on the distributor.
