There are 3 major inspections that take place in CA when a car is smog checked. 1) is a physical inspection of the car to make sure it's got all the major parts required by law and that it is safe to be on the road. ie: All mirrors, doors fenders, glass, buper isn't taped on, etc... 2) is the inspection of the lights, signals, tires, gas cap, etc... 3) is the actual test that checks how much nasty gunk your car is spilling out. This is a lot more complicated to answer, but some of the things I have noticed with may car that affect the pass/fail are: Oil change: I always do this right before I take my car in to get smogged. I'm not sure how much of it really matters, but I figure it never hurts to wear clean filters to the test. Timing: Almost everytime I have FAILED it has taken nothing more than a base timing adjustment to get me back on track. This is a quick and inexpensive fix. $20/20 mins. Exhaust leaks: This system works because all the exhaust is headed in one direction. Once you start getting leaks it throws the whole thing out of wack and then all bets are off. And of course: You didn't have a Catalytic Converter on the car, or you had a shitload of exhaust leaks.
Yes!
yes it suppose to circulate the smoke if clogged smog test will fail
It depends on where you live. If you live in a state that requires smog tests, yes, it will cause the vehicle to fail. The test includes verification of the status of the emissions diagnostic codes. In other words, if your car throws a code it won't pass.
I'm not sure what is checked during a smog check. In the UK we have an emissions test. If the vehicle (petrol engined) has a miss fire it will bring the carbon monoxide level down. But in doing so The hydrocarbon level will rise. That will cause a test failure
Probably not as the emissions test (Smog test) is carried out by inserting a sensor into the exhaust pipe.
Yes. Any faulty emissions control sensor, including knock sensors, will result in an automatic fail of any emissions control test, period. It doesn't even matter if your vehicle's actual exhaust emissions are within acceptable limits. In most cases, once it is determined that a sensor is bad, the test is ended immediately, and considered failed.
A faulty EGR valve can cause a 98 Chevy to fail a smog test. The oxygen sensors should also be tested as they can also cause a 98 Chevy to fail a smog test.
Removing the smog pump on a 2.8 engine may be possible, but it's important to check local emissions regulations first. Removing the smog pump may lead to decreased performance and could cause issues with emissions testing. Consult with a professional mechanic for guidance.
Have it scanned to determine problem
On some vehicle it does as it is supposed to be vented through a canister and not the cap for emissions reasons. Another reason you fail a smog test if check engine light is on.
No. It will just report that emissions are too high. The report may list spark plugs or wires as a possible cause for the high emissions. But the test itself cannot pinpoint them as the cause.
Smog is caused by pollutants in the air. The source is often emissions from industrial plants and vehicles.
