its running too rich down tune youre carb
It's lean.
It's lean.
Is there any exhaust system restriction such as a clogged Cat Convertor, a crimped pipe, damaged muffler etc?
You have connected the plug wires wrong. Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Distributor rotates Clockwise, # 1 cylinder is located on driver's side front of engine.
sticky valves. marvel mystery oil in the intake thru a vacuum line while engine is running. it will smoke out the exhaust for a minute and the neighbors will be mad but oh well
Leak in exhaust system perhaps exhaust manifold being sucked in through air intake (grid at lower end of windshield)
It's lean. You have to figure out why.
Backfiring is usually an indication of a lean condition. When it does it during cranking, it's probably timing related.
The valve timing is offAnswersounds like a possible worn camshaft lobe. a fairly common problem on late 70's Chevy small blocks
If there is a exhaust leak anywhere in the exhaust system it will make it back fire out the exhaust. Also raw fuel being in the exhaust pipes will make it back fire too. That is if it is back firing when you let off of the throttle. But if it is back firing when you give it gas that could be bad plug wires are spark plugs, Timing may be to slow. Cam lobe worn down, Not getting enough fuel. could be a # of things. Check these things first, and if you still have a problem, then ask your question again.
When an engine backfires aka (burps) back through the carburetor this usually indicates a lean fuel to air mixture or an intake leak( which is more noticable at low RPM). When the an engine afterfires, aka (farts) out the tailpipe it usually means too rich of a mixture or unburnt fuel is entering the exhaust system
