harmonic balance has left hand thread
It is a standered fine thread bolt, Grade 8
Standard.
Normal right hand thread. Counter clock wise to loosen.
Yes, the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer in place on a 2001 Chevy Malibu is reverse thread. I learned that the hard way and stripped the head of my bolt down to nothing. And the bolt is almost impossible to find, because they no longer make them.
first remove serpintine? fan belt then remove large bolt in middle of harmonic balance. this bolt usually has left hand thread next with a harmonic pulley ,puller, remove harmonic balancer.when removing this, there is a key in the balancer and shaft if a new key did not come with new balancer, make sure not to loose the old one install new balancer with key.use the bolt to pull balancer up tight where it needs to be and use proper torque on bolt
The bolt is just a standard right hand thread. Just took one out of an '01 Xterra.
Remove belt,4 pulley bolts and remove pulley. Remove harmonic balancer bolt and washer, reinstall bolt with out washer, just in about half way.You will need a harmonic balancer puller. These are not very expensive about $20.00 or borrow one from somebody. You just thread the correct included bolts into the balancer where you removed the pulley bolts and will be pushing on the reinstalled balancer bolt. The balancer should clear the bolt head without the washer. This is so you don't damage the threads in the crankshaft.
They are standard right hand threads.
Having E-Mailed Honda Austrlia , and recieved their answer from their technical department I can say that a 1998 Honda Accord V6 3litre harmonic balancer retaining bolt is 16MM x 1.5MM Pitch. i hope this helps. John G W
FORWARD. IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GETTING IT LOOSE, TRY HEATING IT UP. HONDA PUTS LOCTITE ON THE THREADS. THIS SHOULD HELP.
Take it off as you would a normal bolt. It is a 'Right Handed' thread. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench. I also used a breaker bar with a 15/16 inch socket. I place the breaker bar up against the frame and after removing the spark plug wires at the coil I tapped the ignition key. It took a while but eventually it came loose.
