Any OBD2 scanner will work.
There are some scanners that you can hook up to LCD tv's but it all depends on what kind of model and make both the scanner and tv are too see if they are compatible.

The Xerox Documate 510 is a scanner but does not have a printer facility attached therefore it has no requirement for cartridges. There are some very negative reviews for this model on Amazon so caution would be advisable if considering this model.

You should find scanners that offer the ability to scan to PDF. You should also look for a scanner that is an OCR scanner. Frist, of course, be sure that it is compatible with your computer. Secondly, it if supports TWAIN you will get more life out of the model as even when they stop writing driver for it your system should still be able to access it. Finally, a scanner with a removable lid is great for scanning oversized books, maps etc.

For pre-1995 models, you can check out a Haynes or Chilton manual at your local library for your year model. It will have specific instructions on diagnostic codes retrieval and a chart that tells you what each code means.
