I had the same issue the fan was either full on or not at all. The fix was real easy there is a resistor on my van that needed to be replaced. The resistor is below and behind the glove box. The issue may be in getting behind there. You will need to remove part of the dash if I recall correctly. All the best. I was able to get the replacement part at an advanced auto store. Peace.
On a Mercury Villager , V6 engine : firewall 1-----3-----5 2-----4-----6 front of vehicle > driver
5W-30 is the PREFERRED oil
According to the 1997 Mercury Villager Owner Guide ( and one of the Ford websites ) The 3.0 liter V6 engine takes the ( Motorcraft FL-839 ) engine oil filter
It's R-134 and it is not freon any more.

Number @ cylinder is located at the front of the engine nearest the distributor and closest to the grille. Unplug the electrical plugs underneath it, but be aware that this will cause a number of malfunctions.
I would suggest you get a Haynes repair manual. Number is 64200. It is the same as a Mercury Villager.
One way would be to take the VIN number to a Ford dealer, they would be able to tell.

There is more than one part number. This is not a part that is available new, I suggest you contact any parts store about a rebuilt unit.
