Back in ancient times, telephones had to be connected by wires into the basic telephone infrastructure. There was no portable phone system that allowed someone to be constantly available. Radios were an alternative and used by police and emergency personnel.

This radio technology wasn't some thing that someone such as a doctor, or other people that needed to be on call could easily carry and use. The alternative was for the individual to call their office or central location everytime they arrived at a new location to check in.

The beeper allowed the individual to be paged with a radio signal. The earliest ones simply beeped, a signal for the person to find a phone and call their service where a message would be shared. The next generation allowed a phone number to be sent

and the person could call the place needing him directly. They even got to the point where a short voice message could be sent.

Beepers have pretty much been eliminated with the cell phone, but there are still areas were they can be effective and serve a purpose.
