The difference between a Chevy 4 by 4 and Z71 truck is that the Chevy is a 4 by 4 but the Z71 is a off road 4 by 4 but also is capable of being a off road vehicle as it can come with the off road equipment.
Nope. Z71 vehicles are generally 4x4, not 2x4. Starting in 2007, GM started offering the Z71 package on 2wd Avalanche trucks. The badging will only say Z71 instead of Z71 4x4
4x4
yes the true z71's are 4x4 but people put the z71 decals on there standard 2wd trucks because the z71 is the most popular Chevy truck
They started Z71 off road in 1990
Z71 is the Chevy "off road" package. The standard 4x4 doesnt come with as many options. agree with the first answer as Z71 is the GM code for "off road package." it basically includes bilstein shocks and skid plates, along with some trim features. The 4x4 Chevy is just what it says, only a 4WD. The Z71 on the other hand is a 4WD but it also comes factory with skid plates, improved bilstein shocks, different gearing in the differentials (smaller gears, and a locker), it has upgraded cabin air filters, and most Z71 models from 1997 and newer come with push button 4WD "on the fly".
yes
Z71 means "off road" package, as far as I know they are all 4x4's - thus the "off road" designation
99% of all Z71 trucks are factory 4-wheel drives.
The transmission is a 4L60E 4x4 version
