Here is a formula to use:

cost of the part (+tax if applicable) + the cost of labor (+tax if applicable) ;)

There is a standard Time and Labor Guide that is used to estimate and price jobs. The prices are OEM list prices and the times are derived from several technicians doing the actual job and averaging the time it took them to do it. You can find this book at the local public library, in the reference section.

Many shops will show you the estimated labor time for the job, and of course can quote you on the part............................................. figure roughly 300$ to pull and re-install a tranny if its just a swap. 1800-2800$ to have a automatic rebuilt, depending on which automatic is used. of corse the newer the transmission the more its gonna cost. most of the cost is labor, keep in mind you can bye a master rebuild kit for most trannys for 500$-800$. but transmission shops know the average person can't do it themselves so they really take advantage it.
