Tandem axles are connected by spring Multi axle trailers Shipyard Transporters
A ten foot spread axle trailer is allowed 20,000 lbs. per axle, for a total of 40,000 lbs.
It a BIG job. I suggest you have a dealership handle it.
With a ten foot spread, you can have up to 40,000 lbs. total on the trailer axles, but no more than 20,000 lbs on each individual axle.
Most modern passenger cars have split axles--which means that the wheels on each side are attached to separate shafts. This allows the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds as the car turns, improving traction and tire life. A straight axle is just a straight bar, like the ones you'd find on a little red wagon...
They are both drive axles. Under normal straight ahead conditions the power is split 50/50 between the front axles.
A split tandem axle is one where the axles on the trailer are several feet apart. There are 2 types of these. One set if "fixed" and cannot be moved and the other you can pull the slider pin to move them to adjust your weights so your legal. Hope this helps! (BTW if you don't know what I'm refering to this question and answer are for 18 wheelers.)
A trailer with 10' California spread can have 40,000 on the trailer axles without requiring a permit.
The easiest way, without pulling the hub and drive axle, would be to buy a split boot which can be found in most auto parts stores.it comes in two halves which are clamped onto the axle. They work fine.
#1 axle is the steer axle, #2 axle is the front drive axle, #3 axle is the rear drive axle.
Remove the cover, four nuts on the sprocket and remove the metal retainer on the axle against the sprocket (split washer).
Consider replacing the complete axle assembly rather than repairing a CV joint or replacing a torn boot. An axle will cost around $80. I have tried replacing boots with "split boots" that you can put on without removing the axle from the car or doing any disassembly. Unfortunately, they do not last a long time. I did replace a boot with a homemade cloth one. That lasted a long time.
