Performance shift basically makes the transmission shift at a higher RPM, essentially giving you better acceleration. The only drawback is that in the long run you will have lower gas mileage. But that doesn't really matter if you're just trying to keep up with crazy stop and go traffic, or merging onto an interstate, or something like that. Anybody reading this care to add anything? Maybe someone else can give a more technical answer?

As a safety design, you do need to step on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If you are doing this and still can't shift, there may be something wrong in the transmission.
