The speedometer cable is likely bad

The 1997 Chevy Blazer shifter cable will have swivel nuts on each end of the cable. Connect the shifter cable and turn the swivel nuts to the right to install the shifter cable.
unhook a battery cable for about 3 minutes and re-hook.
Loosen the shifter cable not on each end of the shifter cable. The shifter cable will come off. Reverse the process to install the new shifter cable.
Unhook it from the tranny and then the other end is up under the dash hooked to the speedometer, unhook it and take the cable out, just reverse the process for installation.
Remove the positive cable from your 1998 Monte Carlo battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
I tried it and it didn't work too well. I had three aftermarket transmission shifter brackets, and between them, I managed to get it to either shift from reverse to 2 low, or park to drive. The problem with the stock cable is that it is not adjustable for length. I am going to buy the B&M cable, which is adjustable. I already have the B&M shift lever.
