A serpentine belt is a belt that starts at your crank pulley that routes through all of your pulleys such as water pump, power steering pump,A/C pump, alternator, and some vehicles even come with smog pumps. But not a lot of them do.

A serpentine belt is cheap and easy to replace but is a very important part on your vehicle. If it brakes from wear or anything else you will be stranded do to your water pump not working (over heating) and your alternator not (charging). Your car will shut off or just overheat and ruin your engine.

All belts (except timing belts) should be replaced every 30-45k miles.

How do you replace the fan belt on a 1989 Buick Riviera?

There is a small braket at the bottom of the engine that needs to be removed to slip the old belt off and put the new one on. Remove it or loosen one end so you can get the belt around it. One of the pulleys is a spring loaded idler/tensioner for the belt. Use a wrench on the center bolt of this pulley to remove enough tension to allow the belt to slip off. Save this pulley for last when you put the new belt on and repeat the same operation with the wrench. There should be a diagram in the engine compartment to show how the surpentine belt goes around all the pulleys. If not, note how the belt runs before removing it.

How do you loosen the tension belt on a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero to replace the alternator?

There's an idler wheel in the surpentine belt circuit along with the AC compressor, the main crank pully and the alternator. The purpose is to keep tension on the belt, and this idler is spring-loaded. If no serpentine belt diagram is available create one before beginning the steps below. In the center of the idler is a 15mm bolt head. Place a closed-end wrench on this bolt head with the free end pointed towards the front of the vehicle and pry the idler in an upwards motion. Hold the ider in the "up" position and slip the serpentine belt off of the alternator pully with the other hand. Release tension on the wrench slowly and allow the idler to lower to it's bottom stop.

Installation of surpentine belt?

Depending on your vehicle there will be a sticker on your radiator shroud (cover/fan housing) or Under your hood. The sticker will tell you how it is routed through the pulleys. On most cars with a V6 or Bigger have spring tensioners that need to be pried the opposite way of the tensioning. You can use a pry bar or some tentioners have a square hole that you can stick a ratchet in to pry. Once you pry the tentioner far enough you can remove the old belt. And replace with the new. But on smaller cars usually cars with 4 Cylinders have a adjusting bolt usually where the alternator is. In this case you just loosen the bolt until you can remove the belt. Replace the belt tight enough to where the belt can only be twisted half a turn from side to side. Do not over tighten or you can have long term engine problems. Have fun be safe!
