In a full-floating axle, the axle bearing is placed on the outside of the axle housing. This places all the vehicle weight on the axle housing and none on the axle itself. This is important for the front axle which is generally a short shaft. In the semi-floating axle, the axle bearing is placed in the axle housing and the axle carries some of the load of the vehicle. the only difference to changing brakes with a full floating axle , is that you dont have to remove the axle the brake drum will come off the hub with out removing the axle. you may have to get underneath and back off the brakes to free it up enuff to move the drum

Depending on the market and the model, full floating rear axles started appearing about 1976 - in the 45 series and others. Most rear axles in North America were semi-floating until about 1992, when the 80 series all came with full floating axles and rear disc brakes. There are far too many market and axle possibilities to make a blanket statement about what may or may not have been equipped with full floating axles and when.
depending uopn the year you can do this but be sure to match your gear ratio to the front differential or better yet replace as a set.

I am replacing a wheel bearing on my 1993 G20 Beauville, so had to answer this. Depends on whether you have a full floating or semi-floating axle setup. Most Chev 3/4 ton (G20) will have the semi-floating axle. You can identify this at the wheel because you will see only the 5 wheel nuts. This type has a C-clip at the end of the axle in the differential so you will need to remove the differential back cover, then remove the pinion lock screw and pinion gear shaft. Push the axle inwards(probably need a helper) and the C-clip will appear, ready to remove and release the axle. I think it is a little harder to locate the C-clips if you have a locking type differential but they are in there. Full floating is more heavy-duty and you will know it by the 8 bolts inside the ring of wheel nuts on a projecting hub at the center of the wheel. No C-clip for this axle type. I think you just need to take the 8 bolts off and free the hub flange to remove the axle.
