A Fender on an automobile is also known as the Quarter-Pannel in the automotive industry. is is the sheet of aluminum above the tires wheel well .

---

er, most vehicles have this made of steel, although some may be aluminum, or even plastic in a few.

---

Steel is not used for fenders. steel is a heavy duty metal. the only place on a vehicle you can find steel is on some of the hardware; nuts, bolts, and motor mounts. Other than that you have the frame and the axles which are steel most of the time, But not fenders. vehicles are made to be light weight so the gas mileage is more efficient.

---

I disagree...the fenders on these former cars of mine were all steel: VW bug, Pontiac Lemans, Chrysler Newport, Chyrsler Lemans, Volvo 242, Lincoln TownCar, BMW 320i, MBZ 280C, my International Harvestor Pickup, my S10 pickup, even my Suzuki Samurai.

My daughter's Saturn was not. I'm not sure of my SAAB convertible. Don't believe me? Try holding a magnet (protected from scratching with a rag) against various vehicle's fenders.

What does the 'fender bender' mean?

A "fender bender" is a minor automobile accident, one which causes damage but not injury, i.e. "it bends the fenders" (but more commonly the bumpers and lights).Of course, the term originated when fenders were always sheet metal that might be bent back into shape. This is not the case with plastics and fiberglass.
