Accidental overfilling oil in your engine can cause problems. As the crankshaft rotates it will churn the oil, causing aeration and eventually sustained foam may form. This can lead to overheated motor oil, oxidation and a loss of oil pressure. Spongy aerated oil is hard to pump. It starves the engine and critical lubricated surfaces. On most engines an extra 1/2 quart will do no damage, but more than that and you are asking for trouble, Some engines are more susceptible than others. Drain enough out to get it to the full mark and no more.
A Chevy S10 4 cylinder takes four and one half quarts of oil. A 6 cylinder Chevy S10 takes about five quarts of oil.
