The XH code refers to the 301 Pontiac, however that code was used in other years on different engines. You need more information to be sure what engine you have see:http://www.wallaceracing.com/engine1.htm

The date code is back by the distributor, the block casting code is on the "ledge" behind the passenger side bank of cylinders. Most blocks cast after 1970 have the cubic inch size cast on the drivers side of the block, you will need to be under the car to see them, and the are probably covered with years of grime. If the 0718000 is stamped by (usually above) the XH it is the eun# (engine unit sequence number) and is of no value in ID'ing the block.
The fifth symbol in the vin# of the car will tell you which engine it had from the factory. See: http://www.transamworld.com/2genvins.php For vin decoding info.
1979 Pontiac Trans Am
from factory they offered a Pontiac 400 w/ 4-speed or the Olds 403. 301 was also available.
Which 350?? Chevy or Pontiac? A Pontiac engine will drop right in. A Chevy takes a lot more work.
turbo trans am came out in 81
Pontiac did not make a 403 but offered a Oldsmobile 403 in the trans am, lots of work and modification to put in a 1988
21 gallons
You can find a power window wiring diagram for your 1977 through 1979 Pontiac Trans Am in Pontiac service manuals. The service manuals can be found at most local libraries.
To get a 400 Pontiac Motor in 1979, you had to also get the 4 speed. Pontiac last manufactured 400 motors in 1978 but saved some from 1978 for use in the 1979 model. Those motors were used in the 1979 4 speed cars only. 1979 Automatics had the Oldsmobile 403. You could also get a turbo version too. All of which could come with auto trans. I worked on many of these at the Pontiac dealer.
It's rated at 180 hp at 4600 rpm.
