I am not a profetionel on mechanic, but in my knowledge the oxygen sensor control the ratio air/gas , I have a 97 Lincoln continental too and its required to change the two oxygen sensors after 100,000 miles , failure of an oxygensensor may cause your car consuming more gaz .
to change it, the o2 sensor is located down close to the oil filter , I suggest you go to autozone or something like that and you can buy your car manufactur car maintenance book,there is everyhing explained and you can save a lot of money making some easy maintenance and repairs to you car.
the cost of an o2 sensor is from $35 and up , check eBay there are good deals overthere .
