Depending on the year there are 3 different axles. older Cherokees had either a Dana 35 or a Dana 44 (44's are rare). Newer one came with the 35 or Chrysler 8.25.

The front and rear axles are differentials.
Locking axles was not a factory option. Limited slip rear axle was an option. many aftermarket options are available.

All 4x4 Cherokee's came with the Dana 30 front axles. Rear axles were a mix of Dana 35's (both non c-clip & c-clip), Chrysler 8.25" ( 27 & 29 spline), and the hard to find Dana 44.
The emergency or parking brake on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee operates a set of brake shoes inside a hub on the rear axles, this is incorporated into the disc brake setup.

1993 - 1998 will all be swapable. just make sure you have the same gear ratio as the front.
