The check engine light usually means that a sensor on the engine control system has failed. Most auto parts stores will read the code for you for free, and tell you what needs replaced. Failure to replace defective sensors can lead to poor gas mileage and long term engine damage. To simply clear the code and shut off the light, disconnect the battery for 60 seconds or more. If you have not fixed the problem that triggered the code in the first place it will most likely come back on again in a very soon.
