A wire that is getting hot could be shorted to ground.
First make sure it's getting power. Then i'd make sure it's in correctly and that it's engaging the gears in the engine. After that, it's possible the reason the first starter failed is that the engine is seized up.
Check and or replace your starter solenoid.
I had the same problem, and it was a brand new starter. I brought it back to the parts store and they tested it and said it was faulty. They checked starters at 3 other locations, and 2 out of the 3 were also bad, so its very possible that you have a faulty starter if its new.
Try and turn the Impreza engine over by hand. The engine could be locked up and not let the starter turn it over.
1) Check you're owners manual for fuse locations! 2)A new starter does not turn engine??? - Check fuel - Check for spark - Check battery 1) Check you're owners manual for fuse locations! 2)A new starter does not turn engine??? - Check fuel - Check for spark - Check battery

If you have the 2004 model of the RX8 this could be due to the starter motor, Mazda themselves have noticed this problem and have created an upgraded starter motor on the RX8 but this dose come at a cost, Hope this helps
If it is the starter that is grinding then the teeth may have been ground off. Either a new starter or flywheel is in order.
