I have a 2008 expedition with the same problem. i took the outer door panel and found that the cable that pulls the lock mechanism in the door had come loose. My cable "bracket" was actually broken and that's why the door would not open. I am researching what part I need to replace now, but early indications look like the entire window regulator needs to be replaced since the cable appears to mount to the regulator along with the handle assembly. I am calling Ford parts today to verify this...
The usual reason that a door will not open from the inside on a Nissan truck is because the door handle is broken on the inside. The door panel will have to be removed and the door handle repaired or replaced to open the door from the inside again.

The plastic inside door handle is probably broken.
The problem is that the inside door handle is broken. Although the inside door handle needs replacement you can still open the door by pulling on the lock lever above the handle.
You have to take the inside handle apart to activate the latch manually. If you can't do it from the handle area you have to remove the inside door panel.
To open a door on a 1998 Avenger that has a broken handle, a person might have to use another door to gain entry to the vehicle. Then the door can be opened from the inside.
