Also you can use special additives which you can find at local stores. Additives have positive and negative features. Positive: if the leak is not serious it will seal it and save your time and money. But if the transmission leaks very bad you have to do what was recommended before. Negative: if you live in any state with extremely low temperatures it's not recommended to use additives because it changes Transmission Fluid viscosity (makes it more viscous) and it can damage the transmission.
Answeryou should start by finding where the leak is coming from. Then clean the transmission with brake clean or something similar and start the car to let the fluid run and confirm the leak is from the suspected area. Then it should only take a gasket or seal to fix the problemThe repair on the transmission line will depend on where it is. If the leak is at a coupling then the joint may be able to be tightened. If the line itself if leaking or split then it will have to be replaced.
If it is leaking at the bottom where it sets into transmission--shouldbe an "O" ring seal
look for the leak and repair it . I would do that before i thought about buying a new tranny.
It all depends on the failed part. If the leak can be repaired without a rebuild, then yes.
Find the leak source and repair it. Usually the cause is cooler hoses.
If it's oily, it's transmission fluid. You need to fix all leaks as soon as possible. Or you will have soon a serious bill for repair. If it's not oily it might be the coolant, you need to find the leak. If you don't do that you will get a bill but not as big as the transmission repair.
Determine the origination of leak and repair Could be transmission cooler line, seal, etc.

Transmission fluid can leak from many places. It could leak from the actual transmission itself, or any of the tubing that goes from the transmission to other parts of the car.
