More specific information would be needed for an answer; like the model year and type of transmission on the vehicle (manual or automatic).
and also if you just dropped the pan and changed the filter, or if its completely empty. i changed the filter and gasket on my 1997 ranger and it calls for Mercon V (5), i used valvoline, but any brand is sufficant as long as its Mercon V (5). It took 4.5- 5 quarts of fluid added to reach the line again. But remember, if you are replaceing the filter and pan gasket, DO NOT overtighten the pan bolts. You should tighten them snug enough to see the gasket squeeze out to a bulge. if you overtighten, you can destroy the gasket and it will leak tremendously. also, after you have replaced the trans filter and gasket and pan, add about 3.5-4 quarts of fluid(this goes for any car), start the car up, and run it through all the gears- P< R< N<D>3>2>1>, then, 1<2<3<D>N>R>P. Repeat that 2-3 times, then check it and add as needed till you've reached the desired height on the dipstick. I hope this has helped. -Brian-
