That is difficult to answer since shop costs can vary widely. This vehicle should have the wheels aligned after a ball joint replacement as well, so I'd expect to pay over $200 for the repair.
Ball Joint Replacement: I used the rental tool to press out the old ball joint and press in the new one. When pressing out the old ball joint the key is to properly set up the press, tighten the screw on the press, then give the screw a few good solid blows to shock the old ball joint. Once I did this the old ball joint pressed out almost effortlessly. Installation of the new ball joint was a breeze. The only comment is be extremely careful not to damage the axle boot seals. Have wire on hand to tie the spindle assembly and axle for support to prevent damage to the brake hoses and ABS system.
you remove the tire, use a ball joint splitter (too) to dissconect the ball joint from the wheel hub. Near the ball joint on the control arm, there are 3 rounded heads, you can either drill them out or take chisel and punch, and shave off the heads with the chisel and hammer. Then with the punch hammer out the bottom half of the rounded head. The replacement ball joint comes with 3 nuts and bolts, line the holes of the new ball joint and install with the 3 bolts.
I just paid $647 for ball joint replacement plus new front shocks. Tires+ wanted $1100 for ball joint replacement alone. I'd shop around.
Since it's the lower, I think you can replace just the ball joint. Most of the time the uppers are replaced by replacing the entire arm.
Could use more details but, you may need a ball joint press to press it back in. Most ball joints are assembled in the factory as replacement parts. If the ball has separated from the socket, then it has broken beyond repair, get a new assembly. The new one should come complete and is simply assembled, back onto the car, using the tapered peg and lock nut.
