Capacity Provided it has a stock oil pan the capacity is at least 5 quarts and full level is about 6 quarts. Use A healthy '64 389 could burn a quart every 1000 miles. Many Pontiac V8s suffer from bad rear main seals (poor original design) which allows them to leak a quart every 300 miles or so. To diagnose a bad rear main seal have someone drive behind you at highway speed. If your seal is bad you'll know because the car behind will have curious tiny little oil dots all over it.

1964 Standard 389 4bbl had 325 horsepower. Optional 389 Tri-power had 348 Horsepower
1964-1966: 389 CID. 1967-1969: 400 CID. 1970-1972: 400 or 455 CID.
All Pontiac blocks 55-80 are the same, but you may have to swap the oil pan and you will need to use the 64 motor mounts. Transmission is a rework also or use the 55 bolts up using the 55 flex plate.

An intake from a Pontiac 400 will fit a 389 as long as the engine, or more specifically, the heads are from model year 1965 or 1966.
