All 1987-1993 Mustangs have 215 hp with a manuel transmission. An automatic is 195 hp. But remember, ince its a 5.0 motor, the torque makes up for the hp. Many cars nowadawys have around 200 hp, but the 5.0 liter engine is much larger.

The quickness of fox mustangs is proved at the dragstrip.

A 1992 Mustang beats a 1994 Mustang easy, because the 87-93 Mustangs are VERY lightweight. The 1994-2004 models are heavy and are back at the dragstrip, and they have 4.6 liter engines so they have much less torque.

Therefore, at the dragstrip, an 87-93 Mustang can run in the 14 second range stock, while newer Mustangs run in the 15 second range stock.

Sometmes torque is more important then horsepower. 5.0 liters is alot of torque. With a smaller engine, say some sedan with 2.3 liters, that has 215 hp, its not as fast as the Mustang because the engine is twice as small and cant work as easily.

This is why the Fox Mustang, the 1992 by your standards, at 215 horsepower can beat a 1997 Mustang cobra with 305 horsepower. Both weight and torque come into play.

Correction

1987 to 1992 were rated at 225 HP and 300 lbs.-ft. of torque regardless of the transmission. 1993 was rated at 205 HP except for the Cobra. 1994 to 1995 had 5.0L's in the GT's, not 4.6's, that were rated at 215. 1996-'97 GT 4.6's were 215 and 1998 was 225HP

About track times, a stock '92 will out run a stock '94 due to the weight difference of a couple hundred pounds and the slight HP advantage. However, Fox body track times are in the mid 14 second range on average (depending on driver)while 1999 to 2004 4.6L GT's were rated at 260 HP and 300 lbs.-ft. of torque and most of the time ran in the high 13's or very low 14's in the 1/4 mile. A stock '92 will NOT beat a stock 305HP '97 Cobra with an equal driver.

4.6L cars did have less low end torque due to their higher power band, so a lower ratio ring and pinion gear (3.27:1 vs. 2.73:1) was given to those cars to make up for the difference.

In the last few years, Ford has been under rating the power figures and the weight has gone up tremendously. If a 3,100 to 3,200 lb. '92 could beat a 3,500 lb. '97 Cobra because of the weight alone, then it could easily beat a 3,800 to 3,900 lb. 2005 to 2010 GT that is rated at 300 HP. And this is just not the case.

The 2003-2004 Cobra was rated at 390HP. Upon putting down 382 HP to the rear wheels as soon as it left the dealership, someone I know with one of these cars talked to a Ford rep and was told that they guarantee anywhere from 375 to 390 at the wheels on those cars. This means the engine is actually making around 450HP instead of 390.
