I did a quick Google search of my own for my 1999 Taurus, and it appears to be anywhere from $700-1000 (but without labour). I think it also depends where you get it done at, a Ford dealership will most likely cost more than an independent mechanic. Dealerships do charge more but on occasion will have more expertise with a specific model. Definitely be prepared to drop $1000 for your new/old transmission, and if it is less, than you will be ahead of the game!
The bands are self adjusting

My Ford 1998 Escort started slipping. It also leaks and I put tranny fluid in. If I need to replace or rebuild the transmission. How much should a total repair be?

Write a longer question. We need to know what kind of car. I'm in Reno NV and they replaced mine (Ford Taurus) with a rebuilt transmission. It cost me $3,000 but that includes labor.
They didn't have Taurus in 1933.
Simply to remove and replace it is about $1000-1250 at most garages. No trans work or cost of new unit included.
From what I have seen in my area the average labor per hour cost in a licensed certified shop is $90.00 + per hour
AnswerThe transmission is damaged, You will need to take the vehicle to a ford dealership to have the transmission replaced, or fixed. 9 times out of 10 it is cheaper and more reliable to just replace the transmission. My 1996 Ford Taurus Had the same problem in 1997 then again in 1998. Taurus transmissions tend to tear up easily if abused. Make sure that your not grinding gears. Make a full stop then change gears when backing, or vise versa. Also, Check the Transmission fluid levels at least once a month. Also make sure that whenever parking the vehicle that you use the parking brake. The automatic transmission should NOT be used as a braking device!Answer:The most common problem with this transmission is the forward control valveit cost about $10.00 and 3 hours to put in.--Formatted--http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t43838.html
