It will bolt up. But it will not work. The 96 transmission is a computer controlled transmission/ Electronic. The 79 is not.

A manual transmission swap into an '86 would be fairly simple using the components from a salvaged '78 or '79 model (although they are not easy to find). I hope this helps, I own 3 factory manual transmission G bodies. A '78 Monte Carlo, a '79 Monte Carlo and a '79 Cutlass.
